SURVEY I- September 25-30, 2011

My feelings about creating a blog are pleasant. The process is simple and understandable. It's very good that we can organize our work as people of 21 century.  Studying in such way is more interesting and productive.
  1. What do you explore on your own time and when did you begin these interests?(For example, do you have any collections, hobbies? What do you like to read? Do you like to write (even letters or journals)? What do you like to talk to your friends about? Do you have access to computer technology ? Are you a computer user?)
As I work and at the same time I study I haven’t enough free time. Because of my sedentary lifestyle, in evenings I go to gym, practice aerobics and yoga. I like reading very much, and with aim to make this process easier and more comfortable I’ve even bought electronic book. My favorite books are psychological and novels of 19th century. To my friends I like to talk about: fashion, hobbies, relations, travels. I have access to computer and I spend too much time in front of screen. One of my hobbies is journalism. My first steps in this way I made this summer, when I visited School of Universal Journalist. I am communicative person, that’s why I like to share my thoughts to people. Consequently, I’ve made a blog in which now and then I write short stories about my life.

My learning
  1. What helps me be most successful in school/University is...
As a child I accustomed to be always responsible, diligent and persistent pupil. These qualities help me and now to be most successful in University and at work.
  1. The last time I felt really successful in school/University was....
my last session in University, when I realized that my knowledge of English, which I received during my studying at school are useful and that all my efforts don’t pass down the drain.
  1. What I do to make my education applicable to my work is...
Although I don’t work as a teacher at school, but results of my education I use in my work very often. Pedagogy and Psychology help me to find a common language with students of different ages. And even if I’m not a teacher of English, the knowledge of this language is important and necessary to all modern people, especially to computer and internet users. I advise to all my students not to neglect studying of English even for further employment.

In this study, self directed learning means: Learning which we take all or primary responsibility for. We pursue an interest of our own. We are highly engaged in gaining a specific skill, learning something new, expanding on an idea. We generally feel highly motivated in this pursuit. We generally determine the where, when and how for the learning and often the experience of the learning is very memorable later.
Please, give me some feedback on the following:
  1. Are you currently involved in this type of learning at work or in your free time? Can you describe an example or two of self directed learning in your life now or recently? (Prompts: Think of a particularly memorable time when you learned something new, or pursued an interest of yours; perhaps a fun, interesting or exciting project. Describe the event, your memories, feelings, significance).
To tell the truth, I don’t pay enough attention to self directed learning, but this summer, when I visited Bulgaria I had an opportunity to speak with many foreigners and I realized an importance of knowledge English in my life. But in the same time I noticed that my vocabulary is not enough for full-grown communication and I decided to raise my level. I’ve started to watch American serials in original and to read news on foreign sites. I’m happy to learn something new, especially on themes I’m interested in. I have plans to read several books in original because it’s an amazing feeling to understand international language.
  1. Tell about one time that you got really interested in something you were learning in school/University. (What was it? Who helped you or taught you, describe your feelings at that time, what did you do (read, write something, work with a friend, used computer technologies for your studies...)?
One thing that was really interesting in studying at school in English lessons was project work in groups. We put performances, draw pictures, sang songs. Our teacher helped us in everything and to describe my feelings of that time I should say one thing – then was the first time when I thought about profession of teacher=) In University such time was during last session, when we made our blogs. It’s something new and very interesting!
  1. Think back on your school experiences in elementary and middle school. What was school like? (Prompts if needed: What went well, what didn't? What were you good at? Did you like it; why or why not? Were you encouraged to ask questions, discuss your ideas?)
I’ve always been calm and serious pupil and I didn’t like atmosphere in our school. Noise, big amount of pupils in class and absence of opportunities choose what you’d like to study. Of course, I have courage to ask questions, but the most productive studying was in English lessons, where pupils were divided into groups and I felt myself as at home.
  1. List some things you want to learn more about:
    • Life and habits of foreigners
    • Modern language in England and USA
  1. If you saw your learning as your complete responsibility, what would you change about the way you learn?
In self-directed studying I see only my responsibility for result and if I had more free time I would change a little the way I learn. I’d like to study more regularly and I’ll try to.

  1. Can you give me an example of a project or a time when you really got involved in what you were learning and applied what you learned? (Prompts: How did you decide what to do? How did you know how to go about studying and organizing your work? How did it feel, what do you remember about the process? Was anyone coaching or helping you? How did you get that help? Did you work on your own or in a group?)
I’m sorry, but I can’t remember such example. But I’ll think about it!
  1. Who has influenced you (if anyone) to be a self-directed learner? (Prompts: What did they do? How did they influence you?)
To become a self-directed learner was my own decision. When I entered the University I’ve already had a job, that’s why I hadn’t opportunity to study every day.
  1. If you could plan and direct your own learning more, what would you study? How would you change school/University to make it possible? (Prompts: Where would you learn? Would you learn in a Virtual Class with a group? What would you do; i.e., read, research, experiment, do a project work, what?)
To my mind, the biggest disadvantage of our studying, are our books, which are outdated and boring. If I could change something, at first, it would be books. Also I would like to learn in a Virtual Class but I’m not sure that I’ll always have time to because of my rigid schedule of work. I’m also interested in doing a project work on different themes but I haven’t experience in it. Maybe I even want to have some English practice in school, where I can help organize some projects and activities, which could be interesting to students. I’ll think about it more…
